Pattern Interruption
My most recent series entitled: “Pattern Interruption” marks the introduction of pattern into my monotype sculptural prints, with an expanded emphasis on form and structure. The origins of this exploration are rooted in memory. As a child I began each school year with plaid dresses sent by my aunt from New York, recalling the comfort and familiarity of those patterns, I wanted to evoke that sensation by layering color in multiple directions. At times, scraping ink away from the plate to reveal underlying layers, with a spontaneous approach generating unexpected and unique patterns. Beginning with the structure of plaid help break the ice, eventually leading me to introduce tape as a tool for making stripes, while creating accidental moire’ effects with vibrating color interactions.
