Mom's Shorthand Series

My prints have morphed from 2-D, bas-relief to sculpture in the round. This transformation has been intriguing and liberating for me, as I still consider myself a printmaker, while pushing the boundaries of what a print is supposed to be. I always start with the basics, flat paper, ink, brayer, and a printing press, however what happens next becomes a new journey, ending always as a pleasant surprise! This series is an homage to my Mother who worked as a secretary at the IRS all of her adult life. Knowing shorthand was one aspect of her job in order to take dictations and transcribe into typed form. She was also adept with computers before they were used by everyone on a daily basis. I was always in awe of her ability to write and read shorthand and was inspired to create my own interpretation of writing in shorthand, while having fun with shapes and colors. This piece represents the ability that she was never given credit for, while training others to go on to have illustrious careers, as she remained a grade five in the government since I was in the 5th grade until she retired.
